Alpha Betas Rigs
Tommy
I started Alpha Betas pilot back in early 2021 between Sweet Tweets and Summer Memories. It came back in spring of 2022 with 4 new episodes. It was fun going back and updating some of the characters and making new ones too. Tommy is one of the main 4 characters of the show and I love his bear hoodie.
I have updated this rig in my spare time to have eye direction. My director said not to so the rig used for the show didn't have it, but I wanted at least two rigs to have one to show I can do it.
Tommy's spacesuit redress was a tricky one. there were no designs with his helmet off nor do have one without his hood. So we just took the hood from his hoodie and used that. Most riggers would make the helmet one piece but not me, for possible head tilts I broke the helmet up for more movement.
Whenever I build a character that has some kind of screen over their face I always turn display in OpenGL off. It makes it a lot less of a hassle to select a drawing in the face and then a controller for the screen so you can still easily select it.
Prostitute
I know what you're thinking and yes this is a character in the pilot but I mean it was the wild west, prostitutes were a thing back then. Even so I love her design and I had fun rigging her, never thought I'd rig boobs but there's a first for everything. She was a side character that would show up in the pilot from time to time.
I did update her to have a eye direction master controller. It was a trial and error to deal with the upper eye lid but I think it turned out great. With at least two rigs having it I prove that I do know how to use the grid wizard.
Jordan Whaler
Jordan Whaler is a very detailed character but I'd say Mother Nature still takes the cake. Design was a bit slow so I took my time in making this character detailed. Most character rigs for this show would have new drawing in the turnaround but not this one. Some details were redrawn for each view mostly because that would be better for the animator but most were deformed to make it tweenable.
I made every detail a separate drawing and deformed it to every view in the turnaround in hopes that posing and tweening would be easy for the animator. I believe that I succeeded though the character was in the show for very long. Still I'm proud of this rig.
Small side note a coworker who sits next to me and I nicknamed him 'Prince.' He really looks like space prince to me.
